Over the last several months, I've transitioned into a completely different place in my life. This month especially, I'm learning what it means to be a free-lance musician while holding a very busy full-time job. Every day is exhausting and I simply don't know how to cram more stuff into a single day. While being this busy is stressful, it is also undeniably exciting. I'm finally seeing the outcome of putting effort into my image as a professional musician and teacher. The skills I've gained from playing in community ensembles, doing loads of office/business work, and teaching a growing private studio is immeasurable. In short, I'm probably not making as much as I could doing a regular office job, but the skills and connections I've made because of the work I'm doing is getting me places I never thought I'd go. All of this realization came from reworking my webpage. After looking over my resume, I realized that it didn't stand out or represent all of the work I've done lately.
Alas, a resume is in the works and will be posted soon. In doing this, I now am more self aware of the skills and attributes I bring to my job as a musician, teacher, and business professional. If you are feeling down about not getting the work you want or feel like your putting in a lot of work without the return, it may be a good idea to refresh your resume. It certainly has helped me put the busyness and stress in a positive light.
